European Super League

Post by tonyp »

This subject has been discussed at some length on the unofficial message board. It has been headline Sports News here in Australia.
ABC News for example-
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-04-19/ ... /100078150
The six Premier League clubs say they will continue in the domestic competition as well as this new league which will be midweek.
Assuming it goes ahead I'm guessing it will cause problems as well as a lot of adverse criticism.

The so-called big 6 are no longer the big 6, Leicester & West Ham, have certainly gatecrashed that group.
I don't judge people on race, religion, gender,
ability or size, I judge them on whether or not
they're a prat!

Some of the outrage on this is so hypocritical! 30 years ago money took over football & it effectively lost its roots, now people are going on about Chelsea & Arsenal to continue supporting their community & roots when they're already charging £80 a ticket.

The Champions League is already set out by accountants, designed to maximize revenue through having as many teams from the wealthiest countries with the highest viewing figures as possible.

The Premier League has been designed to take as much money off the fans through TV subscriptions & tickets, why else would allow these billionaire Americans want a piece of the action?

The Germans have the right idea with their socialist running of their clubs, the capitalist system in England puts the many real fans in the hands of the billionaire owners. Completely unfair but it was greed that created this monster in the first place!!

Nobody should be surprised. The biggest clubs in the top flight have been trying to form a super league for as long as I've been following football.

It's come about because there's 4 Champions League places, and six clubs who believe they should have the revenue from the Champions League. So they want to create a league whereapon they're guaranteed that income every year, hence no relegation from the ESL.

No surprise that its driven by the American owners who think that the NFL model would work in Europe.

It'll happen again. It'll keep happening until the greedy clubs get what they want, because they believe they're bigger than the game.

There's two sides to having rich, foreign investors. In some ways you have to sell your soul a bit. It's amazing how it's only now that it's finally registering to some fans that they're being milked by corporate greed!
