Ashes Fifth Test

Post by tonyp » 03 Jan 2018, 11:33

Likely teams
Australia 1 Cameron Bancroft, 2 David Warner, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Steven Smith (capt), 5 Shaun Marsh, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 Tim Paine (wk), 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Josh Hazlewood, 11 Nathan Lyon.

England: 1 Alastair Cook, 2 Mark Stoneman, 3 James Vince, 4 Joe Root (capt), 5 Dawid Malan, 6 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Tom Curran, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Mason Crane, 11 James Anderson

If Anderson and Broad can keep their form from Melbourne England may have a chance of winning this Test.
I can't see Cook repeating his heroics from Melbourne. Not because he is not capable but it just doesn't seem to work that way in cricket. It really is time for Root to come good.

I'm surprised to see Moeen Ali in the England line up but who knows? He might come good this time.

It is also time for Warner to get another big score and even Bancroft.
We shouldn't have to rely on Smith every match.

Subject to the weather I expect Australia to win.

I acknowledge that most Poshies on this message board aren't interested but Wycliffe might come up with a reason why England could win.

Stumps Day 2
England 346 all out
Australia 193 for 2
Australia probably favourites.
But it could still go either way. England won the toss and batted. If they can get Smith out early tomorrow they will be in with a very good chance of a first innings lead.
And Australia have to bat last on what is likely to be a worn turning wicket.

Where are you Wycliffe?

I've been out all day but just came in to get a score and I see it is England 68 for 4.
Australia declared at 649.
England trail by 233 runs with 6 wickets remaining
Blimey, it looks as though England are unlikely to win this one.
But I'm predicting that Root will play a Captain's knock and save England.
What do you think Wycliffe?

Joe Root 42 not out.
Come on Rooty. Make a game of it.

Joe Root was taken to hospital with severe dehydration.

It is now about half an hour before play is scheduled to start. Apparently Root is on the way back to the ground but probably will not continue his innings straightaway.

That is not just bad news for England, it is bad news for the game.
