The end of racing at Kempton

Postby daib0 » 11 Jan 2017, 13:10

The historic Kempton Park racecourse could be closed to make way for 3,000 homes as part of plans to raise £500m to invest in horse racing.

Course owner the Jockey Club says the proposal, with Redrow Homes, is "for the long-term good of British racing".

A new all-weather venue, most likely located at Newmarket, would be built as part of the plans.

Should the proposal go ahead, Kempton's famous King George VI Chase would move to Sandown, located six miles away.

Racing will continue at Kempton until at least 2021, and the redevelopment will only proceed if more than £100m is raised from the sale and the all-weather circuit is given the go-ahead.

Three-time champion trainer Nicky Henderson tweeted: "The King George isn't the same race at Sandown. Kempton is a track National Hunt racing cannot afford to lose. It's that simple. Very sad news indeed."

Indeed it would be a shame for it to happen, it is one of only about a dozen courses I have been to. I remember with fondness backing a winner there called Persian War, older forumites may rememember him. I'd consider courses at Huntingdon, Taunton or one of the Newmarket courses would be preferable.

makes sense to close it, with Sandown being so close

less sites with more races makes more sense to me

Chester is our nearest course, and is a great day out, we also get some good point to point racing around here, being part of the Cheshire set
Rochdale to Bolton 2016 - 2017

We travel past Chester Racecourse of course, when, and if we ever play Chester City FC.

as a big horse racing fan....i'm dissapointed but not surprised.

the jockey club have longed wanted an all weather track at newmarket...and this will fund it and other "projects" they have in the pipeline.

as a member of the sudbury council said yesterday..."that's 3,000 homes means 6,000 cars and we already have the most over crowded doctor's surgery in the country"

stuie...it may sound sensible to switch the king george to sandown but it's a totally different track to kempton, which is built for speed...sandown for stamina.
