I didn't know either Carrie Fisher or Debbie Reynolds personally.

There were thousands of others who died over the past couple of days worldwide. I didn't know them either.

What is it with everyone typing 'RIP [random celebrity]' these days on social media like they knew them?

Utterly ridiculous.

People like Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds have brought a lot of joy to many people and they are simply expressing their thoughts about them. They are doing no harm to anyone.

Of course they're doing no harm to anyone. Sheep rarely do.

As human beings we can dream, hope and look at the stars. When people on stage and television (and football) become successful we acknowledge them as stars because they have shone brighter than we could have ever achieved. Far from being sheep, we mourn their passing because as people they were unique and special.
Yes rest in eternal peace Carrie Fisher and Deborah Reynolds and all the other stars this year. They were special.

Absolutely. :)

Does the news that one or more of the high-profile celeb deaths over Xmas was related to drug abuse change anything?

After all, these are role models right?

Not really. They were only human after all and fame/ fortune can affect people in different ways. I don't believe in role models as destiny is mostly in our own hands but we can look beyond people's mistakes and see what they have achieved in general and be admirable of them when they die. None of us can claim to be angels.

As most people know, my son died recently under tragic circumstances, at least I can show compassion to others, perhaps you have been lucky and have never lost anyone, it is not a good place to be.
