Has always been the way the so called bigger clubs tend to try and swoop for young talent before they are ready to make sure one of the other big clubs doesn't get the chance just in case they are a hidden gem. It happened to Posh towards the end of the 2001/2 season when a young local goalkeeper made his debut, (oddly enough against Reading), he the played one more home game before being signed by Manure for 500,000 never to taint their first team. He has gone on to have a relatively succesful career, most notably with Barnsley and Panathinaikos and now warming the bench at places like Nottingham Forest and Millwall. Would probably have been a regular in his home town team if given the opportunity to stay.. We also lost Billington and McKeever under similar circumstances to Sheffield Wednesday, and Etherington and Davies to Spurs (who did both feature in the Spurs first team for several years).

It’s like someone such as Lucas Piazon. Been at Chelsea since 2011 and has appeared once for then in all that time! He’s been on loan to:

Malaga
Vitesse
Frankfurt
Reading
Fulham
Chievo
Rio Ave

He’s now 25 and clearly nothing more than a journeyman footballer, they might as well release him. That'd be a real shame of a life, if that were me ....

When Piazon signed he stated: "I chose Chelsea because I like the Premier League. I think my way of playing and my skills are more suited to the Premier League"

In other words - they offered him more money, (or his agent a lucrative deal)

Chelsea have got plenty like this.

Matt Miazga: Signed January 2016, has played twice and is now on loan at Reading aged 24.
Izzy Brown: poached at 16 from West Brom, 6 years later he's had numerous loans with 1 Chelsea appearance in there.
Marko van Ginkel: Signed at 20 in 2013, has played four times in that time and been on multiple loans.
Kenneth Omeruo: Signed in January 2012, has only just left. Never appeared in a game for Chelsea.

Liam Hatch was a pointless signing for us.
