Bury

Bury will be expelled from the Football League today unless a suitable buyer is found or, more pertinently, Dale accepts an offer. An owner who was described merely as "a very successful businessman" by the club's official website upon his takeover last December has proved to be anything but. A closer inspection of his history in business reveals a track record selling the assets of struggling companies.

It’s always the same, the ones who suffer are the fans, it’s happened to a lot of teams in the last 40 or 50 years some have come back but others never have. Aldershot, Maidstone, Accrington, Scarborough, Rushden, Newport, Wimbledon, Barrow, Workington, Southport, Stockport, Chester, Halifax, Hereford, Gretna, New Brighton, I’m sure there are many others that have escaped my memory, Bury and possibly Bolton are just the latest in a long sorry list.

I'm sure you have a better memory than me. I wouldn't have remembered a number of those.
But if my memory serves me correctly I do seem to remember that Gretna went bankrupt more than once.
There are also a large number of Aussie football clubs that went broke but that's another story.

Very sad and need not have happened. Wonderful mixed memories of Gigg Lane including the very, very coldest game I have ever attended which I wrote about in an article for a football stories book...…"Posh Away Days".

I remember that game as if it was yesterday Brian. I've never been so cold - except maybe for a Tuesday night one year at Tranmere! Was it a cup game of some sort? Mind you, it was never 'warm' at Gigg Lane! It will be missed a great deal by us away fans.
