Safe Standing

Please help defeat the stupid, ill educated and nonsensical decision by this equally stupid, ill educated woman who has refused to accept the advice of the safety groups the government have put in charge of looking at the premise, the police who agree standing in seating is more dangerous and almost impossible to control and large numbers of football fans including those who don't even want to stand.

Please sign.

Reply from my MP.

Better than nothing or a totally dismissive one from her tory predecessor.

Dear Adi,

Thank you for contacting me recently about safe standing at English Premier League and Championship football grounds. Please accept my sincerest apologies for the length of time it has taken to respond to you.

I agree that this is an important issue. Indeed, I note that over 110,000 people have signed the petition on the UK Government and Parliament petitions website calling for English Premier League and Championship clubs to be allowed to introduce safe standing. As a result, a debate on this issue will take place in Parliament on 25 June 2018.

I know that the Football Supporters' Federation has long campaigned on this issue and that surveys carried out by supporters' trusts at a number of clubs have shown high levels of support for safe standing. At the same time, I note that organisations representing the families of victims of the Hillsborough disaster, which was the catalyst for the law requiring all-seater stadiums, are divided on this issue.

The current government states that it believes all-seater stadiums are currently the best means to ensure the safety of fans at football matches in England and Wales. It also states that it continues to work closely with the Sports Grounds Safety Authority and football authorities to consider advances in technology and data that may enhance the existing policy. It notes that the debate on 25 June, in which I intend to speak, will provide the opportunity to discuss the nuances and complexities of sports ground safety in more detail.

At the 2017 general election, I stood on a manifesto that called for sport to be run in the interests of those who participate in it and love it, and pledged to give football supporters a greater say in how their clubs are run. I also committed to reviewing the role of fans in sport governance more widely. I can therefore assure you that I will take your views into account as I continue to monitor this issue prior to the debate.

Thank you once again for contacting me.

Yours sincerely,

Fiona Onasanya MP
