Where the mighty have fallen

Post by bristleposh » 14 Sep 2017, 08:44

My knowledge of football is poor and only goes back to the fifties, although I'm aware of teams that won the 1st Division and FA Cup back to the 19th century. The more recent history including the times when relegation from the football league started.
Even the younger ones must rememember the 13 sides in the nationwide conference http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/nat ... ague/table Halifax, Aldershot, Wrexham, Macclesfield, Dagenham & Redbridge, Leyton Orient, Maidstone, Gateshead, Tranmere, Hartlepool, Barrow, Chester, and Torquay
Looking at the Nationwide league north I spotted 8 former teams I can recall seeing Posh play in the league, two of which they played at Wembley http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/nat ... orth/table. York, Bradford PA, Stockport, Darlington, Southport, Kidderminster, Boston and Gainsborough
In the next level down appear Hereford United http://www.evostikleaguesouthern.co.uk/ ... nfo/tables , and Staylebridge Celtic and Workington in the north http://www.evostikleague.co.uk/match-info/tables Glossop and Scarborough one level down http://www.evostikleague.co.uk/match-in ... n_id=35519 .
At level ten are Rushden http://www.evostikleague.co.uk/match-in ... n_id=35519

A couple of others I have unearthed include Nelson and Darwen in the North West Counties league, and New Brighton who no longer have a team.

There are no doubt others I have overlooked, any history buffs know of any

Since posting I recalled Darwen being in the football league years back, and have now included them above.

Blimey you must have done a lot of research to come up with that bristle!
Several of those teams I have never heard of. Stalybridge Celtic for instance. Surely they never played Posh.
Of course I recognise Gateshead who were thrown out of the league in our favour.
Being happy never goes out of style

memory is failing me, I honestly thought it was Southport, but I was wrong as usual, the four teams voted in when we joined were
Peterborough
Oldham
Southport and
Hartlepools
