Blacks v Whites

Postby bristleposh » 27 Nov 2016, 23:17

Just watched a wonderful historical documentary, driven by Adrian Chiles about a game that took place at The Albion in 1979 for a testimonial game. Great recollections from some great old players who were involved in the match, including one who'd been a bin man in Westbromwich for the last 30 years.

The one gripe I have about the programme is that once again Les Ferdinand coming on and saying it is because of racism that there are no managers in the top flight. Personally I think it's because they're not good enough, Paul Ince has tried several clubs and didn't Les himself just sack a black manager at QPR.

John Wile played for the white team, he seems to have forgotten that he once played for and managed The Posh.

George Berry and Ian Benjamin also played for Posh as well as John Wile.

That's Len Cantelllos testimonial game. He was awarded it despite being sold to Bolton for £350,000.

Just watched it. I'm sure Paul Bradshaw was in goal for the Whites team too .

I had overlooked them but the comment was more about Wile saying when he came down from the north he'd never seen a black person, giving the impression that the first time he'd seen any was when he rocked up at Albion. I think I'm a similar age to him and I remember lots in the Gladstone Road, Cromwell Road area.

This has got me thinking who was the first black player for Posh? I remember Trevor Quow from 1978. Anyone before him?

Yep, a fella who played in his bare feet. Will have to check the records for the spelling as his name was something like Tessa Balogun (sp?) Season 1955-56. Did not play in the first team, but here a short time and played regular in the Reserves. Saw him play several times from memory, in the Eastern Counties League, very quick, good ball control, but never quite made it.

He played in bare feet? A good job Conor Hourihane wasn't around then.

I think Brianposh, you must be referring to this guy, Teslim Balogun. Thanks to Wiki. :)

Those old leather balls must have been hard on bare feet surely. Poor guy.
