Obviously there is nobody on here as old as I am.
I idolised Emery and MacNamee and Norman Rigby. But I answered David's question about the first idol. In my case it was before the great Dennis Emery.
I do believe that most fans of that era will rate Emery as the greatest of all time.
Had his career not been ended so tragically I feel Posh would have climbed the leagues as in 1960/61 despite only winning the 4th division we were probably one of the best 20 or so teams in the football league. :clap2:

Sadly I hear Peter is not well atm.

Lovely lovely man who I have had the privilege of meeting many times and I am told by the really old one hell of a player.
It's not so long ago that Peter came to London Road and spoke to an invited audience in the Sponsor's Lounge. He was amusing and full of life (even if his Scottish accent was occasionally difficult to understand) He had many stories to tell about his life in football. Totally fascinating. So sorry to hear that he is not so good at the moment. Please keep us informed if you can Adi.
 I've just realised you have tarnished me as being 'really old!' :?
loved the guy, he lived just around the corner from me when I was at my parents house
He now lives 2-300 yards from me now Nick.

Great to see the mercurial inside-forward Freddie Martin mentioned but for me he is pipped by that wonderful entertainer Paddy Sloan, ex-Arsenal and Eire International who was one of the first stars of English football to try their luck on South America (Bogota) along with England centre-half Neil Franklin. The overseas adventure turned sour eventually and they returned wiser but no richer. Inside-forward Sloan, in his 30s by this time, was snapped up for Posh by Jack Fairbrother and was a huge crowd pleaser during the late 1950s with his many tricks, skimpy continental-style shorts in the era of knee-length baggies, fancy skills and a good share of goals, especially during our great Cup runs as Non-League giant killers. Paddy was a wonderfully, enigmatic Irish character who had the huge Posh crowds of those epic days in the palm of his hands. I am now in my 81st year but memories of Paddy Sloan are as clear and cherished as ever.

I'm another fan of Denis Emery, but my all time favourite was George Hudson, never seen a forward head the ball with such power.
A lot of his heading power came from his hand a lot of time lol

Theres a few heros for me The Doog, Terry Bly, Frank Rankmore and of course Denis Emery

Bobby Barnes for THAT cross @ Huddersfield, made the trip as a 16 year old living in Cheshire at the time & slept the night at Manchester Victoria (I think) train station as I couldn't get home afterwards.

when you had a forward line with Hails, Emery, Bly and McNamee (all of whom scored over 20 goals in THE season) and when Rigby was the captain who did virtually no wrong all season, then for me it was practically impossible to pick the first among equals. But I would say those five and the others in the squad were my first and foremost idols.

Other good lads, later on, included all the names mentioned by others, as well as Cozens, Gregory, CMS, Freddie Hill, Robbie Cooke, Britt, Kellock etc etc

but certainly my first idols were the !960 forward line

Yep, I can remember him doing that as well! It was laughed at then but if it happened today it would cause a complete outcry of cheating and calls for bans of all sorts. The difference being the amount of money involved between now and then all those years ago!

Simon Rea.
1st player I ever plucked up courage to speak to. Then I won his shirt which I had framed and takes pride of place on my POSH wall.

Then Adam Newton ..... Neeeeewts!!
Loved my rattle. Gave me his shirt. Proper gent.
We go again...

You also got Gaby's shirt when we played them down at Gillingham earlier in this season - but there won't be enough room on your Posh wall as you had already filled it up to the brim with the Simon Rea shirt!
