Memory Lane

Post by moysroadmajor » 23 May 2018, 17:53

Just to lighten the mood, pass the summer and jog my fading memory: Can anyone remember any tales or what happened to a character/bit of a scally called Linnet who used to frequent London Road in the late 50s/early 60s?
I seem to recall him using someone else's field as an 'overflow carpark' and charging people a few bob to park there. I think he was also the one who used to shout 'lucky old arsenal' whenever they won and he was selling the pink 'un?

It's a no idea from me, in those days I used to walk to the ground, didn't really know anyone other than my school friends who I went with, sounds like a job for Brian.

Me neither. I used to come in on the train to the East Station and then simply walk across to the ground.

Me neither! Lived in Glebe Road till the mid 70’s, so car parking wasn’t an issue!

No help from me I am afraid. We parked in Glebe Road until the 70/80's then at Moys End Car Park. Only ever stood in Moys End 4 times in my 67 years.
All my time in London Road End,/Enclosure in front of Main Stand and then the Lounge since I retired 22 years ago.
Have never come across the gentleman concerned, or heard of his "antics".

I well remember Linnet from my early Posh days in the 1950s. He used to sell programmes anywhere from the Town Bridge to the London Road entrances. There were many tales about this wily old rogue who lived on his wits. Best known was the one about appropriating a farmer's field to use as a paid-for car park but this had nothing to do with Posh. To the best of my recollection the field was just off the A1 at Water Newton so I can't imagine what the event was to require extra parking.
